Limited Space: Call For Artists & Photographers
Hey crew!

We have been bummed about not being able to hold events with Lockdown going on. So, we have been brainstorming ways to hold a Limited Space safely.

This is what we got:
Limited Space, Drive In Movie style. We Project art on 12’ X 9’ outdoor screen in the Art Center Parking lot, set to music. While guests stay safely in their cars. Guest can listen using their car radios.
Artists sell virtually. We are setting up a system to help direct guests to your preferred sales method while they watch. We are also planning a virtual tip jar for artists that works with Venmo and Apple Pay.
This time you don’t actually have to be physically present. But we would love to have you attend if you are available.
When/Where:
Saturday, June 20th at the Des Moines Art Center Parking lot
As usual there are no fees to participate or commission taken from sales!
How to apply to show? Email us at: limitedspace@teamrockpaperscissors.ninja

Easy – Please email us these 6 things:
1. 7-10 photos of your beautiful art to use during the showcase with titles please.
2. Your name as you want it represented.
3. Your social media link (Instagram preferred).
4. Your Preferred sales method. Give this some thought please. We are going to send their phones right to whatever this is. A sales website, shopify, or similar is good. It could also be an email template or email address.
5.The virtual tip jar! Please email us your Venmo and/or phone number if you prefer Apple Pay.
6.What you would like to say to the guests. (One – three sentences) It could be anything, but it is intended to be a stealth sales tactic.

Alternatively - you can apply online at https://www.limitedspace.co/call-for-artists
We are considering posting the showcase online during of art week only. Let us know what you think about that.

80+ Artists projected on screen| 2 DJs Providing Vibe Music | Free to Attend | One Night Only | Safe | Presentation Loops Starting Every 20 Minutes | A Part of Art Week Des Moines

Life changes fast. When lockdown stunts aspirations and social distancing mutes connection, where does art land?

Can a quiet act of creation be a rallying cry for the wild and free?

Can we summon our modern-day stoic moment?

Now, at the pivot point, art taps the successor.
None of us know what kind of summer we are looking at, but we could all use a dose of art and community. Please join us for a night of art and music.

More than 250 works of art will be projected on our outdoor screen. While you stay safely in your car.

The showcase will be on a 20-minute loop.

Music Starts at 8:30 pm with the slideshow starting at 9 pm (just after sunset). And like it says in the name, space is extremely limited, so plan accordingly and come early.

Got Bias with Black Benatar
This lunchtime event - part performance, part cultural equity training - will be led by social justice drag queen and JEDI trainer Beatrice Thomas from Authentic Arts and Media. As their fierce and fabulous drag persona, Black Benatar, they will explore the role bias plays in our lives, how privilege impacts us, and how we can use it to create positive change in the world. Jonny Stax will gather ingredients from this performance to lead people in making potions throughout the week. This virtual performance promises to be fun, interactive, and stimulating as we journey together toward creative justice and equitable love.

Join us this summer as we learn about bias and make potions to transform Iowa’s artistic practices and creative communities to be more just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive (JEDI). We are kicking off a virtual potionmaking process at Des Moines Art Week during lunchtime sessions and continue throughout the summer. Creative Iowans will be encouraged to make and share potions leading up to the Iowa Arts Summit August 7.

This session is sponsored by the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs, as a preview for the Iowa Arts Summit on August 7, 2020. The summit brings together artists, filmmakers, creative entrepreneurs, non-profit professionals and community leaders for a day of networking, learning and celebrating the arts in Iowa. (all week long) Amanda Tate's Memento
Olson-Larsen Galleries presents a new installation at the OL Guild, "Memento" is an installation exploring the dynamic interplay of movement and space. Using a motion-controlled painting robot named Manibus, Amenda Tate creates abstract works of art from dance. These linear vestiges are a physical record of time and energy shared – a reminder of otherwise ephemeral moments.

Tate's installation will be available for outside viewing beginning Thursday, June 18th. The OL Guild is positioned on the corner of 4th and Maple Streets with windows on three sides, so it is an ideal, contact-free art enjoyment destination for your socially distant walks through Historic Valley Junction! "Memento" will be on view throughout the duration of Art Week Des Moines.

(all week long) DSM Emerald City: All Yards Art Show
An All Yards Art Show about playing with #yardwork

How to participate: https://www.rachelbuse.com/dsmemeraldcity.html

For the 6th annual Art Week Des Moines, you are invited to participate in a city-wide art installation. Rainbows, thank you notes to postal workers and teddy bears in windows are visual ways our communities are reaching out to show support for each other. As we practice social distancing, we continue to find ways to be together, apart. Design your #yardwork installation with materials you have handy at home. Coordinate with your neighborhood on a theme, or surprise everyone with your own vision. You could even use your yard as a performance space.

With lots of yards participating, the Greater Des Moines area will be transformed into DSM Emerald City. Driving, walking and biking through neighborhoods will provide unexpected surprises from a safe, social distance. This project is initiated by local artists Rachel Buse and Christopher Chivetta. Both are sculptors interested in working in nature and use material and color to explore meaningful interactions with people.

DSM Emerald City will be promoted for viewing the week of Art Week Des Moines, June 19th-26th. Follow Art Week Des Moines on Facebook and Instagram. Use the hashtag #dsmemeraldcity and #artweekdsm2020 when posting on social media.

(all week long) Below the Median Income: the audio component
Below the Median Income is an art installation of visual and audio components to place the visitor outside the space they routinely travel. The audio components are interview recordings obtained from people involved with public or non-profit organizations. The interviews tell the visitor about where that person routinely travels. The installation contrasts Des Moines ranking as “Best in Nation” place to live, “Iowa nice” reputation of being overly friendly and go out of our way to help fellow citizens, and the visitors’ personal story.

The installation was inspired by two quotes: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” from entrepreneur, author, and motivational speaker Jim Rohn; and on March 12, 2018, Director Joshua V. Barr Esq. of the Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission said, “We have seventy-five percent of students experiencing some form of poverty in Des Moines Public Schools, so what can we do to improve that outlook? Research has shown that if a person remains in an impoverished condition up through their adolescent years they are more likely to remain in that position as they become older and become adults.”

Lunchtime Potionmaking Sessions: Inclusion
Building off of Black Benatar’s performance, we will hold daily potionmaking sessions to blend ingredients from their JEDI stories with ingredients from our own stories. Uncle JoJo’s recipe Potions for HumanityTM engages people in brewing their own healing tinctures through storytelling, power sharing, and art making. We are calling all creative Iowans to make potions that conjure the powers we need to adapt toward more JEDI artistic practices and creative communities. We are beginning with bias as we awakening to new understandings of the world. Each day we will explore one component of JEDI transformation - Justice on Tuesday, Equity on Wednesday, Diversity on Thursday, and Inclusion on Friday.

Creative Iowans will be encouraged to make and share potions leading up to the Iowa Arts Summit August 7. Learn More.
